Umag

Umag is a charming town situated on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula.

The city of Umag was founded by Roman noblemen that made the town their summer residence. The beauty of the time is still reflected today through glamorous Venetian houses in the old city. A touch of history is evoked by the well preserved city walls, churches, fortress, baroque and renaissance buildings.

While spending time in Umag, you can visit the old town core and explore its narrow streets and hidden galleries. The city has a vibrant cultural life that often hosts many exciting concerts, festivals, and other cultural events throughout the year. Even for sports fans, there is the ATP Croatian Open Croatia that is part of the 250 series of the ATP Tour. The tournament began in 1990 as the Yugoslavia Open and has been played every year since.

Umag is surrounded by beautiful hills with old fortresses now turned into small agrotourism businesses. There you will have a chance to try some delicious homemade specialties while learning more about the colorful Istrian History.

Key facts

The Savudrija-Salvore lighthouse, still remarkable for its beauty, is situated in the vicinity of Umag. It was built in 1818, and was, as told by many historians, impressive for its architecture at the time. According to some local tales, the Savudrija-Salvore lighthouse was built by the Austrian Count Metternich for a beautiful Croatian noblewoman with whom he fell in love at a Viennese ball. Tragically, the noblewomen died during construction, and the Austrian Count never revisited the lighthouse.
